Flash Mob Brings Fame to Kid’s Homemade Arcade
A touching short film about a boy in East LA who built an arcade out of cardboard in his dad’s auto parts shop hit the internet on Monday and has already spread like wildfire.
Caine Monroy was discovered on a chance stop to the auto shop by filmmaker Nirvan Mullick, who then shot the film last fall. A rough cut of Caine’s Arcade was originally screened at a DIY Days event in October.
“I think it reminds us how far we’ve come as adults, but also reminds us how much we want to get back to that place,” says Mullick.
Located in a part of LA without much foot traffic, Monroy’s games stayed mostly idle until Mullick discovered them and helped put on an event that got Monroy a large and enthusiastic audience via sites like Facebook and Reddit.
It’s a sweet story that brings viewers back to a time of potent imagination and creativity.
Commentors on the film’s Facebook page as well as websites like Boing Boing have all written in expressing their support for Monroy and his ingenuity:
“I want to be 9 again…”
“I fondly remember building airplanes out of cardboard and tape as a 9-12 year old …”
“America needs what you’ve got kiddo.”
Since hitting the internet the film has also raised thousands of dollars for a college fund that Mullick set up in Monroy’s name. In just 24 hours it blew past the original goal of $25,000, letting Mullick raise the fundraising bar to $100,000.
